Dog food allergies are because some of the proteins and carbohydrates found in dry dog foods contain enzymes that carry antigens that your pet may have a hypersensitivity to. Just as people may develop allergies to certain foods, your pet may develop dog food allergies to certain components in dry dog food. It could be dog food allergies to wheat or some other component found in dry dog food.
Dog food allergies are becoming more common in dogs. Food allergies are also found in cats as well. The symptoms of dog food allergies mimic other types of allergies and treated differently than other dog allergies. Dog food allergies are not difficult to diagnose, they just take time and patience.
Many types of dog allergies come from different pathogens. It is these pathogens, or enzymes found in dog foods that can create allergy symptoms in your pet. The difference comes in the diagnoses and treatment of the offending substance and how the particular allergy is treated.
Dog food allergies can occur in pets as young as two to six years of age, or as old as twelve. Allergies diminish the quality of life for your pet. It is nothing to take you pet to the local shelter over. It is just something that may happen over time and needs to be addressed like any other problem your pet may develop.
