Dog Contact Allergies
What are dog contact allergies?
Dog contact allergies are allergies that occur when the dog’s skin comes in contact with either indoor or outdoor allergens. These allergens can be from any number of sources. They can be from things as simples as grass to normal household chemicals.
Dog contact allergies, while not life threatening, are problematic to the dog and can cause irritation and itchiness. It is hard to determine whether or not your pet is suffering from dog contact allergies, since itchiness can be caused by any number of allergens from fleas to carpet powder.
Active outdoor pets are more prone to dog contact allergies than less active indoor pets. Cats seem to be more prone to contact allergies than dogs, but dogs can suffer from dog contact allergies.
As with any allergic reaction to allergens, the pet will need treatment or removal of the allergen to alleviate dog contact allergies. Although, the best way to avoid allergies in dogs is to make sure their environment is kept allergen free, and their overall health is kept as normal as possible, it is still possible for a dog to contract dog contact allergies. No pet is totally immune.
